Tourist Sqaure |
Well, with about a week to go, it was time to fall into the tourist traps so I grabbed a lunch and headed to Trafalgar Square. Predictably, despite the overcast afternoon and the slight drizzle, it was packed.

The Olympic countdown clock |
Tourists everywhere hovered around the fountains reading their guidebooks and snapping away at the landmarks, climbing the giant lions to get their pictures taken and posing by the Olympic countdown clock. Street vendors surrounding the Square sold every imaginable thing with either the Union Jack or a portrait of the Royal couple painted on it.

Nelson's Column |
The National Gallery steps were overrun with onlookers watching street performers and avoiding pigeons.

Street perfomers |
And pigeons, yes, pigeons everywhere! I suppose pigeons are synonymous with Trafalgar square and despite every effort with signs and warnings to not feed the pigeons and wire barriers around statues to prevent “pigeon-poop defacement” there were still pigeons everywhere! I walked around the square a few times taking photographs and getting stopped by a lot of tourists to take their photographs and then sat back down and ate the rest of my lunch.

Pigeons and one annoying seagull |
The cold was beginning to come back in and the day was getting darker. I took some photographs of Nelson on his column, a few of the stately lions at the base of it, and then made my way through Covent Garden. There was a lot of construction going on in the City in anticipation of the Olympics and the same was true here. The blend of coffee aromas with pizza sauces melded in the air.

Battle: Los Angeles |
Ben and Jerry’s still had as long a line as the theater ticket office did on this cloudy day. Movie theaters advertised "Battle: Los Angeles,” and I thought of home and all round, tourist still flocked through the streets taking photographs.
Ah, well I guess I can’t fight it. I was a tourist in the land of tourists right now, so might as well embrace it. And with that, I went in search of commemorative Kate and William tea towels to bring back home.
